The South African Clay Awards

The Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum was recently accepted as an affiliate member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), an organisation affiliated to Unesco and devoted to Ceramics excellence.  In response to the newly acquired IAC affiliation the Clay Museum’s curators proposed a new biennale awards exhibition, the South African Clay Awards, starting in November 2024. The works entered were digitally presented to a panel of 10 national and international selectors chosen for their expertise in the field of ceramics who chose 50 pieces for the exhibition from a pool of over 500 entries.

Louise, the baboon

We have shut our ears to their rumbles, hisses, purrs…

Anthropomorphism views animals as automata, beings that cannot speak therefore cannot reason. It permits the emotional distancing that opens the door for forms of abuse such as medical experimentation. Louise is communicating her melancholy at this state of affairs, but she is doing so affectively using bodily semiotics.
